Synopsis in German
Der Wilde Westen 1908: Der alternde Revolverheld Big Jake McCandles lebt mit seinem Hund in Abgeschiedenheit. Der alte Haudegen hat seine Vergangenheit hinter sich gelassen und Frau und Familie verlassen. Als seine ehemalige Ranch überfallen und sein Enkel Jake von Gesetzlosen entführt wird, sieht Martha McCandles keinen anderen Weg, als ihren entfremdeten Mann um Hilfe zu bitten. Die Entführer fordern eine Million Dollar für die Freilassung des Kleinen. Big Jake kehrt zurück und begibt sich mit seinen zwei Söhnen auf die Jagd nach den Entführern, die sich mit dem Kind nach Mexiko abgesetzt haben. Es kommt zum tödlichen Showdown. (ARD Presse)

Remarks and general Information in German: Der Spätwestern "Big Jake" ist der letzte Film des Regisseurs und Western Spezialisten George Sherman und zugleich die letzte Zusammenarbeit der Schauspieler John Wayne und Maureen O'Hara.
Die spannende Geschichte erzählt nicht nur einen Western, sondern thematisiert auch die Beziehungen der sich entfremdeten Familie. Immer vor dem Hintergrund der anstehenden Zeitenwende: Denn der Wilde Westen und die unendliche Freiheit befinden sich bereits im Niedergang, die Moderne hat Einzug gehalten und so sieht man die Polizei anstatt hoch zu Ross, in neuartigen Automobilen sitzen, die im unwegsamen Gelände stecken bleiben. Doch John Wayne verkörpert den Charakter des Big Jake als einen Mann der alten Schule, der Instinkt und Pferd mehr vertraut als der Technik. (ARD Presse)
