Synopsis in German
Dezember 1814. Nach langer Seereise kehrt der junge, naive Edmond Dantès (Pierre Richard-Willm) nach Marseille zurück. Die Mannschaft hat ihn zum Kapitän ernannt, als der alte auf See verstarb. Edmond freut sich auf das Wiedersehen mit seiner geliebten Mercédès (Michèle Alfa), mit der er sich noch am Abend verloben will. Doch er hat üble Widersacher: Caderousse (Alexandre Rignault), der Bootsmann, neidet ihm den Kapitänsposten, und Fernand (Henri Bosc), der Vetter von Mercédès, neidet ihm die Frau.

Die beiden denunzieren ihn wegen eines Briefes von Napoleon an seine Anhänger in Frankreich, den er auf Bitten des verstorbenen Kapitäns mitnahm. Die Sache landet bei Generalstaatsanwalt de Villefort (Aimé Clariond), der erkennt, dass der Adressat des Briefes sein eigener Vater ist. Deshalb schickt er Dantès ohne Verurteilung in das berüchtigte Gefängnis Chateau d'If und erklärt in einem Brief an den Gouverneur, dass Dantès ein gefährlicher Verschwörer sei, der nie mehr freikommen dürfe. Dantès' einzige Freude in den langen furchtbaren Gefängnisjahren ist Abbé Faria (Ermete Zacconi), sein Zellennachbar, der einen Tunnel zu ihm gegraben hat.

Als der Abbé 20 Jahre später im Sterben liegt, vertraut er ihm den Plan des Verstecks eines unermesslichen Schatzes auf der Insel Monte Christo an. Edmond gelingt im Leichentuch des Abbés die Flucht von der Felseninsel. Ein Schmugglerboot nimmt ihn auf und er findet seinen Schatz. Nun kehrt er unter neuer Identität als wohlhabender Graf von Monte Christo nach Frankreich zurück, um seine Verderber zu bestrafen, seine Freunde zu belohnen und seine Verlobte wiederzufinden.
