Synopsis in German
Florenz 1938. Obwohl die schwarzen Uniformen der Faschisten nicht mehr zu übersehen sind, verdrängt die Anglo-Amerikanische Gemeinde die Gefahr und genießt unbeschwert Müßiggang und Partyleben in imposanten Renaissance-Villen.

In einer solchen Villa residiert die englische Schönheit Mary Panton (Kristin Scott Thomas), die seit dem Tod ihres Mannes auf die Großzügigkeit ihrer Freunde angewiesen ist. Als ihr 25 Jahre älterer Bekannter Sir Edgar Swift (James Fox) Florenz besucht, hält er um ihre Hand an.

Mary schätzt Edgar sehr, liebt ihn jedoch nicht. Dennoch scheinen die Vorteile einer solchen Verbindung verlockend. Als zukünftiger Gouverneur von Bengalen könnte er Mary ein Leben im Luxus bieten.

Auf einer Dinner-Party der Prinzessin San Ferdinando (Anne Bancroft) lernt Mary den Amerikaner Rowley Flint (Sean Penn) kennen, der trotz seiner Ehe als Frauenheld bekannt ist. Schon bald fühlen sich Mary und der Charmeur zueinander hingezogen.

Rowley legt Mary nahe,dass es ein unverzeihlicher Fehler wäre, einen Mann zu heiraten, den sie nicht liebt. Mary flüchtet sich in ein sexuelles Abenteuer mit dem österreichischen Flüchtling Karl Richter (Jeremy Davis), das in einer Tragödie mündet und sie ultimativ zu einer tiefgreifenden Entscheidung zwingt.
