Wie sich aus der Produktionsgeschichte von The Immigrant ersehen lässt (...), wurden zunächst die Restaurant-Sequenzen gedreht, die alsbald eine klassische Suspense-Situation etablieren: Der Held befindet sich in einem Raum, (...) in dem bald eine 'Bombe' (in diesem Fall: der furchterregende Eric Campbell) 'detonieren' wird. Doch obwohl diese Konstellation in drei Varianten durchgespielt wird (und Chaplin allein von der Bohnen essenden Edna Purviance mehr als hundert Einstellungen drehte), ergab diese Situation nicht genug Material für einen "Zweiakter" (...) von etwa 30 Minuten Länge. Mithin wurde die (...) Schiffspassage des Immigranten 'nachgedreht'. (...) Chaplin [verwendete] dabei (...) eine auf einen Drehzapfen montierte Kamera, die (...) Bilder konstanter Schlingerbewegung produzieren konnte. Mit dieser Aufnahmetechnik und Chaplins akrobatischen Fähigkeiten waren die Voraussetzungen geschaffen, um die Vorgeschichte des späteren Paares effektvoll zu inszenieren.
