Synopsis in German
Mit salbungsvollen Worten von "unsterblichen Bergen, wo die Menschen klein und Gott gross sind", mit der Präsentation untadeliger Charaktere, die "ihr Leben riskieren, um das anderer zu schützen", beginnt BLIND HUSBANDS und erinnert damit zunächst an zeittypisches Bergpathos. Doch da ist auch der leichtlebige Kavallerieleutnant von Steuben (Erich von Stroheim), dessen Bergbegeisterung nur Tarnung ist, um sich an wohlhabende junge Touristinnen heranzumachen. In der Gattin des amerikanischen Arztes Dr. Armstrong (Francelia Billington) hat er ein neues Opfer gefunden. Denn Armstrong (Sam de Grasse) selbst findet zwischen ärztlichem Pflichtbewusstsein und Bergsteigerei kaum Zeit für seine Frau. Höhenmoral stösst hier, karikaturhaft zugespitzt, auf Amoral und Hedonismus. Am Ende gewinnt erwartungsgemäss die Askese, und von Steuben scheitert sowohl an der Charakterfestigkeit von Mrs. Armstrong als auch im alpinen Zweikampf mit ihrem Mann. Doch bis es soweit ist, spielt Stroheim genüsslich mit Etikette und Erotik und stattet den Tugendwettbewerb grosszügig mit Ironie aus." (Filmarchiv Austria)
