Reviews in German: "Typisches Bio-Pic der Vierziger Jahren in tollen Technicolor-Farben, die Biographie des Musical-Komponisten Jerome Ker, dessen "Show Boat" als erstes echtes amerikanisches Musical gilt. Die Inszenierung ist ziemlich schleppend und wirkt recht antiquiert, aber manche der Shownummern mit den Stars der damaligen Zeit bleiben sehenswert." (lhg 2006)

Im weitesten Sinne eine Art Biographie über den Songschreiber Jerome Kern, bietet der Film im Grunde ein Medley von Kern-Melodien, das in eine recht schlampige und lückenhafte Handlung eingebaut war. Kern starb kurz bevor der Film in die Kinos kam. Der Atmosphäre nach zu urteilen, die er vermittelt, könnte man annehmen, dass man ihn als eine Art Nachruf konzipert hatte, was jedoch nicht der Fall war. Kern war sogar zugegen, um als Ratgeber bei den Dreharbeiten Hilfestellung zu leisten. Es ist schwer zu verstehen, was ihn hatte dazu bewegen können, Robert Walkers lächerliches Portrait seines Schaffens ernst zu nehmen und in dieser Form zu akzeptiern. Und dass man Walker für die Hauptrolle vorgesehen hatte, war mindestens ebenso ein Fehlgriff wie später Mickey Rooney in der Rolle des Lorenz Hart in Words and Music. (...)"
