Jean-Pierre Melville was born under the given name Jean-Pierre Grumbach on October 20, 1917 in Paris. He was a French Director, Actor, Author, known for À bout de souffle (1959), L' Armée des Ombres (1968), Le Samourai (1967), Jean-Pierre Melville's first movie on record is from 1945. Jean-Pierre Melville died on August 2, 1973 in Paris. His last motion picture on file dates from 1972.
Biographical Notes in German: Der französische Regisseur Jean-Pierre Melville gehört zu den Vorläufern der Nouvelle Vague. Malle, Chabrol und Truffaut wurden von ihm stilistisch inspiriert. 1917 in Paris geboren, war Melville als Schauspieler, Bühnenregisseur und Drehbuchautor tätig, ehe er nach einigen Kurzfilmen 1947 seinen ersten Spielfilm "Das Schweigen des Meeres" nach Vercors drehte. 1949 verfilmte er Cocteaus "Die schrecklichen Kinder". Weitere Filme von Melville, der gern Außenseiter und Verfolgte zu seinen Helden macht, sind "Drei Uhr nachts" (1955), "Eva und der Priester" (1961) und "Der Eiskalte Engel" (1967).

Eigentlich Grunbach, änderte er seinen Namen nach seinem Lieblingsautot in Melville. Als Jugendlicher bereits meherer Amateurfilme, von 1937 bis 1945 in der französischen, englischen und der freien französischen Armee. 1946 Debüt als Regisseurs eines Kurzfilms, dann beachtliches Spielfilmdebüt mit LE SILENCE DE LA MER und LES ENFANTS TERRIBLES in Zusammenarbeit mit Jean Cocteau.
Obwohl der älteren Generation angehörig gelang Melville der Durchbruch erst mit dem Erfolg der französischen Nouvelle Vague Ende der Fünfziger Jahre.
