Joe May was born on November 7, 1880 in Wien. He was a German Director, Author, Producer, known for Hilde Warren und der Tod (1917), Die Hochzeit im Excentricclub (1917), Das wandernde Bild (1920), Joe May's first movie on record is from 1911. Joe May died on April 29, 1954 in Hollywood, California, USA. His last motion picture on file dates from 1944.
Biographical Notes in German: eigentlich Joseph Mandel, Studium an der Universität Berlin, Inhaber eunes Textilgeschäftes in Triest, dann Autoverkäufer und Rennstallbesitzer, ab 1909 Operettenregisseur in Hamburg. 1911 wird er Regisseur bei der Continentalfilm, gründet 1914 eine eigene Produktionsgesellschaft. 1916 wird er beim Drehen in einem österreichischen Schützengraben verwundet. Drehte auch vier Filme bei der Sascha-Film in Wien mit seinem Bruder Heinrich Eisenbach aös Darsteller.

Urheber der Stuart Webbs (mit Ernst Reichert) und Joe Debbs (mit Max Landa) Filme, der ersten Serials in Deutschland, zu denen sich May von amerikanischen und französischen Vorbildern inspirieren liess. Errichtete die Filmstadt Woltersdorf bei Berlin, nach 1926 Regisseur bei der UFA. 1933 Emigration nach Frankreich, 1934 durch Vermittlung Erich Pommers nach Hollywood.

Joe May war mit der Schauspielerin Mia May verheiratet.
