Gene Gauntier was born under the given name Genevieve Liggett on May 17, 1885 in Kansas City, Missouri, USA. She was an American Author, Director, Actress, known for Betrayed by a handprint (1908), The Girl and the Outlaw (1908), Ben Hur (1907), Gene Gauntier's first movie on record is from 1907. She was married to Jack J. Clark. Gene Gauntier died on December 18, 1966 in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Her last motion picture on file dates from 2011.
Biographical Notes in German: Eigentlich Eugenia Gauntier Liggett, Schauspielerin ("The Kalem Girl") und Autorin des frühen amerikanischen Stummfilms, begann unter dem Künstlernamen Gene Gauntier eine Theaterkarriere in New York, dann aber ab 1906 vor allem als Partnerin des Schauspielers und Regisseurs Sidney Olcott (1873-1949), mit dem sie in circa 200 Filmen zusammenarbeitete. Ihre ersten grossen Erfolge hatte sie mit Filmen für die KALEM wie Ben Hur (1907) oder The Scarlet Letter (1908), wo sie die Hauptrolle spielte und auch Regie führte. Aufgewachsen in einer gutbürgerlichen Familie im Mittleren Westen, wurde sie bald zu einem gefeierten Star der neugegründeten KALEM. Bis 1912 drehten Olcott und Gauntier vor allem Filme an zahlreichen ausländischen Locations wie Irland, Deutschland, Ägypten oder Palestina. 1912 heiratete sie ihren Filmpartner, den Schauspieler Jack Clark. Nach dem Bruch mit Kalem versuchte sich Gauntier nur mit mässigem Erfolg als Produzentin ihrer eigenen Firma, der Gene Gauntier Company mit Olcott und Clark. Schon nach kurzer Zeit schied Olcott aus der Firma aus und gründete seine eigene Produktion, und wenig später zog sich Gene Gauntier 1915 vom Film zurück.
Während des Ersten Weltkriegs arbeitete sie als Kriegskorrespondentin, später schrieb sie Filmkritiken. Ihre Ehe mit Jack Clark wurde 1918 geschieden. Nach Kriegsende reiste Gene nach Europa, unter anderem auch zu ihrer Schwester, der Opernsängerin Marguerite Gauntier Liggett (1890-1973), die 1909 in London den schwedischen Industriellen Axel Lennart Wenner-Gren (1881-1961) geheiratet hatte. 1928 erschien in Woman's Home Companion ihre Autobiographie unter dem Titel "Blazing the Trail". Sie ist auch die Autorin zweier Romane Cabbages and Harlequins (1929) und Sporting Lady von 1933. 1942 liess sie sich in Mexico nieder, wo sie 1961 im Alter von 81 Jahren starb. (lhg Pordenone 2011)
